Another school story:
Recess duty (for 2nd grade)
A little girl runs up to me and the other teacher,Mrs. M, on duty, points to another little girl that's hunched over and says,"I think she got kicked in the nuts!"
Mrs. M looks at her and says,"SHE doesn't have NUTS!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At Noah's soccer game (he scored 3 goals!):
A little girl runs past us to the people sitting next to us and yells "I think you live near me!"
The nice people reply "oh yeah? Where do you live?" and she replies "in Ohio!"
(She must be my neighbor too! :-)
This job has not been good for my ego...
I had a K class in my room and one of the kids was being difficult, not getting off of his computer. I asked him nicely a time or two, then helped him off his computer, telling him he needed to flip his card. When his teacher got to the room, this is the conversation that went on...
Me: D, why don't you tell Miss J why you need to flip your card.
(He rolls his eyes)
Me: Okay, I'll help you. Did you listen the first time I asked you nicely?
(shrugs his shoulders and sighs)
Me: How about the second or third time I asked you?
D looks up at me and asks: Is there ANYBODY more annoying than YOU????
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple days later, I was doing lunch duty and a second grader called me a bitch. (Another teacher later asked, "Well, were you being one?" and just for the record, no)
A week after that, a 5th grader called me a retard.
It's a good thing my feelings aren't hurt easily...
because yesterday, a first grader ran up to me and gave me a big hug, stopped and put his hand on my stomach. He looked up at me and innocently asked, "Miss H, are you having a baby???" I said, "No" and he said "It sure looks like you are!" Good thing I've already been working out and losing a bit of "baby" weight.
Oh my goodness...
I know I've slacked off with the school stories lately...
I was with the kindergarteners when one raised his hand and was wiggling like crazy. He's this adorable little guy with thick glasses who always calls me "Miss Mouse".
J: "Miss Mouse- Guess what I have in my hand?!?!?" and holds his little clenched fist up
Me: "What??"
He opens his hand to show me a tiny snail shell
J:" Do you know what this is? This is a baby tyrannosaurus rex and it's about to hatch! (He holds it up to his ear) And he says he likes you!!"
How do I not giggle at something like that??
my new job?
My third graders have been slacking off in writing the endings to their stories for writing lab... they just kinda leave the story hanging at the end when they get sick of writing and lazy. So I wrote a really bad story about how my alarm didn't go off, I got fired, and was looking for a new job. I photocopied it, they edited it and wrote a better ending. I let some of them read their endings (unfortunatly without looking at them first).
Tyler stands up and reads his nice little story about how Miss H gets a new job at Hooters and lives happily ever after...
1-27-07
Tempting offer :-)
Cafeteria duty:
Jason (kindergarten) raises his hand.
J: Miss H, I have 2 questions for you. First: Do you like chop suey?
Me: Sure!
J: Also, will you marry me?
Me: Well, you're awfully hansome, but a little bit young...
more kid stories...
One of our kids was having a rough day. He doesn't hide it well when he has bad days, so he walks into the classroom. Another little boy looks at him and says, "Man, you need to meditate, and grab yourself..." whatever that means.
_______________________________________________________
G: "We have cucaracha's in our house!"
wow- multilingual...
_______________________________________________________
The secretary calls down to my classroom and asks me to come up to the office the first chance I get. Cameron looks up and says, "I bet she needs you to bring her some coffee."
This happened right before Christmas break at school....
I was on recess duty when one of my super smart second grade students came up to me and asked, "Miss H, what's jewish?" I told her that it was a great question and thought very carefully before I answered. I knew what church she goes to, so I told her that it's another religion and dove right into a very P.C. speech about different is good and it's about choice blah blah blah blah...
All the while, Madi just stood there very patiently listening. When I finally stopped talking, she very politely said, "I don't think we're talking about the same thing!" So I asked her to use it in a sentence and she says.....
"Well, I asked my teacher when our Christmas party was going to be and she pointed at the clock and said 'twoish'"....
Not one of my finer moments... Anyone have a suggestion for a good hearing aid?
I was doing diagnostic testing with the kindergarteners and pulling them out of the classroom one by one. It was finally Jason's turn (he had been asking me to take him) and he walks into the room and here's how the conversation went
J: "Evan should go next!"
Me: "Yep, actually Evan is next!"
J: "Wow! I must be using "the force"!"
(Keep in mind this is the little boy who once introduced himself as "Luke Skywalker)
For my 2nd grade class, they each have a journal and a long list of topics. I let a student pick one off the list for the whole class to write about in their journals. One of the topics was "Who do you want to marry? What should the person you marry be like?" or something like that. The answers were so flippin' cute... they have the right priorities
Carry: "Somebody who is smart, but not too smart and somebody who will spend time with me. He has to be romantic, funny, and cute. I want a guy that has short brown hair and green eyes. Someone that will help with the kids if we ever have any and help out around the house."
Jenny: "I would like a boy that is nice, cute, takes me out to eat, takes care of me and one that helps me take care of my baby sister."
Emily: "A dress, high heels, that one thing that covers my face. Wear a white dress. I will marry a nice man. I will marry a man that is sweet, kind. I will marry a man that takes care of my children really well. When I'm gone, a nice man will take care of the dogs."
Kevin: " I should marry a pretty girl. I would marry a girl that knows how to cook. I want a girl who has brown hair."
This year is the first year I've worked with third grade (I've been K-2 for the past two years). I was just finishing a writing lesson with the third grader and I was walking out of the room when I ran into a fourth grader.
Dillan: "You teach third grade too?"
Me: "Yep, I just started this year!"
Dillan: "What, did you get a promotion or something?"
ummmm, yeah, something like that
Maybe I'll change my name too...
Just back from the bookmobile with the kindergarteners...
Me: "Come on, Brian! It's time for recess"
Brian: "From now on, my name is Book Mobile. Call me Book Mobile"
__________________________________________________
Cassie: "After school, I'm going to Urgent Care. I caught a bad cough from my dog..."
Who wouldn't love this job???
10-11-06
My nephew (out of no where...)
Noah: "Rachel, you should take pineapple to school. Get a knife out of the fridge and cut it up and give it to the kids. Kids like pineapple..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like everyone to know that I've been mooned by a first grader. He was mad, because he was on the fence... that didn't make his situation any better, but it did make me giggle...

First day of summer school- new confusing building, sure... but that is NO excuse...
Steve (3rd grader) asks where the bathroom is. The other teacher tells him it's right around the corner. Steve rounds the corner, unzips and pisses on the wall...
I guess he DID say he could go to the bathroom "right around the corner"

back to school!!
At a kindergarten home visit...
Jay runs down stairs and says, "come here guys! I need to show you something... I have something that no 5 year old should ever have..."
Me: "Well that certainly is intriguing. I'd like to see that."
His mom: "Me too!"
------------------------------------------------------------------
Travis (1st grade): "I keep my teeth nice and clean because I'm gonna get grillz just like my uncle..."
8-29-08
recess and fiction...
the kids come in from recess:
Carrie (1st): "I was running so much, I'm glistening.... glistening is how girls sweat"
_____________________________________________________
Me: "So, why is this story fiction?"
Johnny (2nd): "Because coyotes can't put fleas in bags b/c they don't have opposable thumbs..."
(among other reasons.)

"I found a dog that was lost. I went to every house on the block. No one claimed her so I asked my mom to keep it. I was not allowed, so I gave it to my Nana. She loves her. We named her Rachel. She is nice, sweet, and cute like you. That is where we got the name."

So we took our first and kindergarteners to Rolling Ridge Ranch- it just has a whole bunch of really neat animals. There's a part where you ride through on a horse drawn wagon and another petting area. The kids just looooooved this and I should've carried around a pen and paper all day for the great comments I got from them! I guess I'll just have to blog the ones I remember (which aren't very many unfortunately)... What a fun day!!!!

Another fun school story...
The first grade teacher and I were talking before school and started giggling and couldn't stop (even when the kids got there)
About an hour later, one of my little girls said, "I know why you were so crazy this morning... It's because you drink too much coffee and it makes you hyper like a little kid..."

Again with the two year old nephew:
Me: Are you silly??
Noah: NO!!
Me: Then what are you?
Noah: I'm a chameleon!
(I'm pretty sure he meant comedian... hehe)

The second grade teacher got a new hair cut. Hunter walks into the room and says, "Whoa! Mrs. M has a mini-fro!"

T: What if it's a bill collector???

Kindergartener retelling the story Jack and the Beanstalk...

Just another day...
We had just finished a lesson on maps in the kindergarten room when the principal walks in... Thinking we would impress her, the K teacher asks if anyone can tell her what the capital of the U.S. After a long quiet pause, Emily raises her hand and says, "Washington Elementary D.C."

Why I loooove my job...
I was doing some testing with a kindergartner. He was doing really well, so I told him how great he was doing and asked him, “How did you get so smart?” He got real serious, thought about it for a minute and said, “Well, ducks are really smart, and I pet a lot of ducks...”
Hmmm....
It was picture day so all the kids were dressed up really cute! I was joking around with one of them and asked if I could borrow their outfit to wear to school the next day. She promptly said no. When I asked her why, she was quick to explain, “When I get home from school today, I’m going to put it on my dog...”Hehe...A little boy picked up a marker that didn’t have any writing on the outside of it. His eyes got huge and he yelled, “THIS MARKER IS BUCK NAKED!!!”
Who wouldn’t love this job?
More later...
11-28-05
A couple more...
"Miss H, do you brush your hair EVERY day?" - I guess I should start getting up a little earlier...
2nd grader writes a question to me in an interest journal: "What is the silver wore? Why do we have a silver wore? Is the silver wore bad?"I ask her about it and she says: "You know... the CIVIL WAR?" hehe...
Lunch duty: L: "Miss H! I get to sit with the ladies! All the hot chicks!" (first grader!!!!)
12-15-05
The night before was the Christmas play and I had told a kindergartner he looked very handsome...
The next day he comes to school and says "Look Miss H... I'm still handsome!"
Letter of the week "F": "Miss H, I know a cuss word that begins with f..." followed by a talk about what's appropriate at school.
On my birthday:
Caley: "Miss H, are you 52?"
Me: "not quite that old yet!"
C: "Are you as old as santa? becaus he must be really old- like 60!"
1-29-06
More fun school quotes:
Me: "Remind me- I’ll probably forget if you don’t"
~Ty (1st): "It’s because you’re getting so old, isn’t it?"
"If I had a duck, I’d put it in a soundproof box"
~Hanna (1st)
"Miss H, when I first met you, you were skinny!"
~Lee (K)
"*sigh* Girls, can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without ‘em"
~Austin (2nd)
After a tough discussion about families and differences:
Me "Families and people come in all different shapes and sizes!"
Casey "You mean I could have a square head right now?!?"
3-3-06
the best journal entry ever...
A journal by Deryk (2nd grade)
"Yesterday I was playing basketball and I slam dunked it. I was as high as Michael Jordan. Except I am not black. I know what I am going to do. I am going to spray paint myself."
hehe, I guess it's logical to a 2nd grader...
3-19-06
soooooooo....
I was having breakfast with my 2 year old nephew, Noah:
Noah: "HEY RACHEL!!! GUESS WHAT??"
Me: "What?!?"
Noah: "Big Ol' CHICKEN!"
Riiiiiiiiiiight...

hope you're not getting sick of my kiddie stories- they're just too funny....
Lunch duty: Walking past the kindergarten table, I hear one boy say to another "Chinese men don't eat chocolate!"
What?

More testing... We read a story about taking care of your teeth and the question said: what's one way to take care of your teeth: go to the dentist, eat candy, or play sports?
Without even pausing, Cam says "Playing sports"... pure curiosity made me ask him why playing sports would be good for teeth. He calmly explained that when he runs, wind blows through his teeth getting rid of the gunk...
I guess that one might be more sad then funny

All the teachers had morning meetings that lasted longer then they should have and were running around like crazy before school (a little frazzled). I was in the second grade room when Tanner asks, "what's wrong with you guys? You look like you went out drinking last night..."
Good observation, buddy.
